Bridge Design Guide

Bridge design, abutments and approach embankments

Bridges combine structural, geotechnical and hydraulic engineering. This guide explains how we approach bridge design, foundations, abutments and assessment of existing bridges.

Start here

A bridge is only as good as its foundations and approaches

Many bridge problems start at the abutments and approach embankments, not the deck.

We design the superstructure, substructure and foundations together, including approach embankments, ground improvement and reinforced soil walls at the abutments.

  1. 01Span & useRoad, rail or pedestrian, and the length to cross.
  2. 02GroundFoundation conditions decide piles and approaches.

What we design — at a glance

An overview only. Every entry below is described cautiously and is not an engineering limit; suitability is always confirmed against site-specific data.

Bridge elements

What we design

Each element is designed to AS 5100 and the client's requirements.

Bridge element 01

Superstructure

Concrete and steel decks, girders and bearings.

Best suited to / typical applications

Road, pedestrian and rural bridges.

Design & construction considerations

Designed to AS 5100 traffic and environmental loads.

Limitations, risks & verification

Major bridges need a staged design and review process.

Bridge element 02

Piers & abutments

Piers, headstocks, abutments and wing walls.

Best suited to / typical applications

New bridges and abutment replacement.

Design & construction considerations

Includes earth pressure, scour and seismic checks.

Limitations, risks & verification

Scour depth needs hydraulic input.

Bridge element 03

Foundations & approaches

Piles, approach embankments, ground improvement and reinforced soil walls.

Best suited to / typical applications

Soft ground and high embankments.

Design & construction considerations

Settlement and stability analysis with numerical modelling.

Limitations, risks & verification

A geotechnical investigation is required.

Bridge element 04

Existing bridge assessment

Condition inspection, load rating and rehabilitation of bridges and culverts.

Best suited to / typical applications

Ageing structures and increased traffic loads.

Design & construction considerations

Assessment based on inspection and available drawings.

Limitations, risks & verification

Missing drawings may need testing.

Selection considerations

What usually decides the approach

These factors tend to narrow the options faster than any single test result. Every recommendation remains site-specific and subject to the available data.

  • Span & useRoad, rail or pedestrian, and the length to cross.
  • GroundFoundation conditions decide piles and approaches.
  • WaterwayFlood levels and scour affect pier and abutment design.
  • AuthorityCouncil or state road authority requirements.

Method

How the work runs

Scope is adjusted to the project, the risk and the information already available.
