When to talk to a consulting engineer in Brisbane (before you spend money)

Most expensive mistakes we see were cheap to avoid. Someone had drawings but no approval pathway, bought a block with a slope problem, or committed to a footing system before anyone looked at the soil. An hour of consulting usually costs less than the first change order.

The questions people bring us

A consultation is not a design package. It is an RPEQ engineer looking at what you have and telling you what to do next.

  • I have concept drawings — is this buildable, and what will the structure cost me?
  • What approvals do I actually need, and who signs what?
  • The slope at the back of my block is moving — how serious is it?
  • My soil report says the ground is problematic. What does that change?
  • The builder wants to swap the helical piles for something else. Is that safe?
  • Another engineer's design looks over-designed or under-designed — can you review it?
  • Can I remove this wall, add a storey, or extend over the existing slab?

Plan review before you commit

Reviewing architectural drawings early is the highest-value hour you can buy. We look at span directions, where load lands, whether the site classification supports the slab you have been quoted, and where the design will fight the ground.

Small plan changes at concept stage are free. The same change after documentation costs redesign, re-approval and often construction time.

Approval pathway advice

In Queensland, most residential work is approved by a private building certifier, with engineering design and Form 15 certification supporting it. Retaining walls over a certain height, work in overlays such as landslide hazard, and work near boundaries or sewers add steps.

We tell you which approvals apply to your address, what documents each one needs, and the order to get them in so nothing waits on something else.

Second opinions and design review

If a design feels heavy, unbuildable or too light, a peer review answers it. We check the load path, the assumptions, the soil parameters and the code compliance, and give you a short written opinion you can act on.

This is also the right service when a builder proposes a substitution — a different pile type, a smaller beam, a changed footing depth. Some substitutions are fine, some are not, and the difference is a calculation.

What it costs

Consultation is $150 per hour, charged in 30-minute blocks, whether on the phone, over a screen share of your drawings or on site. Where the consultation leads into design work, we credit it toward the design fee.

Send what you have — drawings, a soil report, photos, an address — and we will tell you how much time it needs before we start.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an engineering consultation cost in Brisbane?
$150 per hour, billed in 30-minute blocks. Most plan reviews and advice sessions take 30 to 60 minutes.
Can you review someone else's engineering design?
Yes. We provide independent RPEQ peer review of drawings, calculations and proposed substitutions, with a short written opinion.
Is a consultation enough to get approval?
No. Approval needs certified design documents. A consultation tells you what design and approvals you need, and we can then produce them.
