Retaining wall design in Brisbane: types, costs and approvals

Most Brisbane blocks slope. That is why retaining walls are one of the most common things we design — and one of the most common things built badly. This guide covers the wall types used across South East Queensland, what an engineer actually checks, when you need council approval, and what design costs.

Which retaining wall type suits your site

Wall type is driven by retained height, soil conditions, the loads sitting behind the wall and how much room you have to build.

  • Concrete sleeper walls with steel posts — the standard for 0.6 m to about 3 m on residential blocks
  • Reinforced concrete cantilever walls — for higher walls, tight boundaries and surcharge from buildings
  • Block and masonry walls — reinforced core-filled blockwork, good for landscaping and stepped terraces
  • Timber sleeper walls — low walls only, with a shorter design life
  • Piled walls — bored piers or screw piles where the soil is weak, filled or moving
  • Gravity and tiered walls — where you can trade footprint for reinforcement

What the engineering design actually covers

A compliant design to AS 4678 is more than a drawing of a wall. We check active and passive earth pressure, water pressure, sliding, overturning, bearing capacity, global stability of the slope, and the strength of every element and connection.

Drainage is the part most failures come back to. Aggregate zone, geofabric, subsoil drain and outlet all have to be detailed, or water pressure builds behind the wall and doubles the load it was designed for.

Surcharge: fences, driveways, pools and buildings

Anything sitting behind the wall adds load. A driveway, a parked car, a pool, a shed or a house footing within the zone of influence changes the design completely, and a wall designed for a garden bed will not carry it.

Tell your engineer what is behind the wall now and what might be built there later. It is far cheaper to design for it once than to retrofit.

Approvals in Queensland

As a general rule, retaining walls over 1 m in retained height, walls near a boundary or a structure, and walls that support a driveway or building need engineering certification and often building approval through a private certifier or council.

Requirements differ between Brisbane City, Logan, Moreton Bay, Ipswich and Gold Coast councils, and overlays such as landslide hazard or waterway corridors add conditions. We confirm what your specific address needs before design starts.

What retaining wall design costs

Our retaining wall design starts at $450 for a straightforward residential wall, including calculations, drawings and RPEQ certification. Tiered walls, piled walls, surcharge from buildings and long boundary walls are priced on the documents.

Send the survey plan, a site photo, retained height and any soil report and you get a fixed fee back — usually the same day.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an engineer for a retaining wall in Brisbane?
For anything over about 1 m retained, near a boundary, or carrying load from a driveway, pool or building, yes — you need an engineered design and certification. Low garden walls with nothing behind them often do not.
How much does retaining wall design cost?
From $450 for a standard residential wall. Complex, tiered or piled walls are quoted on the documents, and the quote itself is free.
How long does the design take?
Typically 3 to 7 business days from receiving the survey plan and site information, faster where the wall is straightforward.
