Sheds, carports and patios in Brisbane: engineering and approval

Sheds, carports and patios look like weekend projects and are the structures most often built without approval — and the ones most often damaged in storms. Here is what Brisbane actually requires and what engineering covers.

Do you need approval?

Small, low, detached and well set back structures can be exempt, but the thresholds are specific to size, height, use, boundary setback and overlays. Anything attached to the house, over the exempt size, or near a boundary generally needs building approval with engineering.

We confirm what applies at your address before you order a kit — a shed that cannot be approved where you want it is an expensive lesson.

Wind classification is the whole game

A patio roof and an open carport are mostly uplift structures. Terrain, shielding by neighbouring houses, topography and how open the structure is all change the wind classification, and the footing size follows from it.

Kit engineering usually assumes a generic wind class. On an exposed or elevated Brisbane block, that assumption is often wrong.

What we design

Footings, posts, beams, bracing and the connection back to the existing house — including checking that the existing structure can take the new load.

  • Pad and pier footings sized for uplift as well as bearing
  • Post, beam and rafter design in steel or timber
  • Attachment details to fascia, wall or slab
  • Slab design for shed floors, including vehicle and storage loads
  • Kit review and RPEQ certification for approval

Cost

Shed, carport and patio design starts at $1,000, including drawings and RPEQ certification. Kit review and certification is often less, and larger commercial sheds are quoted free.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need engineering for a carport in Brisbane?
Usually yes, unless it is small and exempt. Approval requires footing, post and tie-down design certified by an RPEQ engineer.
Can you certify a kit shed?
Yes. We check the supplier's engineering against your site wind classification and soil, design the footings and slab, and certify the package.
How much does shed design cost?
From $1,000 for residential sheds, carports and patios. Larger commercial and industrial sheds are quoted free.
