The cheapest way to design and build a retaining wall in Brisbane
Everyone wants the cheapest retaining wall. The genuinely cheapest wall is the one you only build once — but there are real decisions that cut cost without cutting compliance. Here is where the money actually goes on a Brisbane retaining wall, and how to spend less of it.
Where the cost sits
Design is a small share of the total. Height, wall type, drainage and what sits behind the wall drive the build cost.
- Retained height — cost rises faster than height because embedment and reinforcement both grow
- Wall type — concrete sleepers between steel posts are usually the cheapest compliant option to about 2 m
- Surcharge — a driveway, pool or building behind the wall can double the design
- Soil and access — rock, fill or a wall a machine cannot reach adds cost quickly
- Drainage — cheap to include, very expensive to add after a failure
Five ways to reduce cost legitimately
None of these involve skipping engineering or approvals.
- Terrace a tall wall into two lower walls where you have the room
- Keep driveways, pools and structures outside the zone of influence behind the wall
- Set the wall line where the cut is smallest rather than where the fence is
- Provide a soil test so the design is not forced to assume the worst case
- Send complete information once so the design does not need reissuing
The false economy
Timber sleepers with no drainage, an unengineered kit wall, or a wall built to a neighbour's detail on different soil are the walls we later inspect leaning. Rebuilding a failed 1.8 m boundary wall costs many times a design fee.
If a wall needs certification and does not have it, it can also block a sale or a building approval later.
Our fees
Retaining wall design starts at $450 with calculations, drawings and RPEQ certification included. Footing and pile design starts at $800. Site inspections start at $400, and a full written assessment report adds $300.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the cheapest type of retaining wall in Brisbane?
- For most residential walls up to about 2 m, concrete sleepers between galvanised steel posts in concrete footings give the lowest compliant cost. Below 0.5 m with no surcharge, block or timber can be cheaper.
- How cheap can retaining wall design be?
- Our engineered design and RPEQ certification starts at $450 for a straightforward residential wall, with a free fixed quote before you commit.
- Can I build without engineering to save money?
- Only for low walls with no load behind them. Above about 1 m, or near a boundary, driveway or structure, an unengineered wall risks failure, council action and problems at sale.
